It is with a mischievous twinkle in our eyes and a pot of her famous gravy simmering in our hearts that we celebrate the life of Susan Castle, fondly known as Sue. Born to the vibrant streets of Staten Island, New York on April 24, 1961, Sue would grow up to be the embodiment of all things resilient, thoughtful, reliable, and empathetic. With her impeccable sense of humor, she would often quip, "Normal people frighten me," ensuring that no one would ever forget her.
Sue was an absolute whiz in the kitchen. The aroma of her cooking, especially her gravy, would lure in family, friends, and even the occasional skeptic. She was also an avid reader, often seen with a book in one hand and a cigarette in the other. After many years of dedicated service as a nurse, she swapped her stethoscope for a spatula and retired in 2005 to focus on her culinary adventures and her beloved family.
Susan lived in various places, including New Jersey and Florida, before finally settling down in Minneapolis, Minnesota. No matter where she was, she brought her radiant spirit and her love for good food. She was an active member of the Italian American Club in Florida, where she held the unofficial title of "Best Sauce Maker."
Her husband Bill, who she married on April 16, 1988, was the love of her life and her partner in crime until his passing. She is survived by her loving daughter Courtney (Darren) Ruthford, and her caring mother Elizabeth Mannino; sisters Kathie (Al) Russo, Mary Adams; brother Glenn (MaryLou) Mannino; grandchildren Maddison and Teddy Ruthford; seven nieces and nephews and their beautiful children, numerous special cousins and many close, cherished friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Philip D. Mannino; her beloved husband William "Bill" Castle and her brother Philip J. Mannino.
Sue's legacy is not just in the dishes she created, but in the love and care she poured into her family. She was a rock in times of trouble, a source of comfort in moments of sorrow, and a beacon of joy in times of celebration.
We invite you to celebrate Susan's life by sharing your memories and photos on her memorial page. Let us remember Susan not with sadness, but with the same joy and love she brought into our lives.
