Mercedes Alvarez

–

St. Cloud, Minnesota

Mercedes Alvarez, a courageous and resilient woman, was born on February 9, 1955, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and passed away on September 22, 2026. Her journey brought her from Puerto Rico to St. Cloud, Minnesota, where she resided for 14 memorable years. A woman of remarkable strength, she was an inspiring beacon of love and generosity, a tribute to her Puerto Rican roots, and a testament to her enduring spirit.

As a mother, Mercedes was the heart of her family. Her occupation may have been listed as 'mom Employed,' but anyone who knew Mercedes understood that she was the hardest working person around. Managing the Alvarez family was a job she took on with pride, providing a loving home for her children. Mercedes had a special talent for making everyone feel loved and cherished. She was known for her incredible aim with the chancla, a humorous and loving disciplinary technique that has become a cherished family memory. She was a woman of many talents, including sewing and knitting, creating beautiful pieces for her grandchildren. As Ernest Hemingway once said, "The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them," and Mercedes trusted us all the best way she could.

She is survived by her beloved children, Brenda Hall Alvarez, Deborah Santiago, Travis Rodriguez Alvarez, Ingrid Santiago, Jaqueline Garcia, Felicia Garcia-Alvarez, Brian Alvarez, Omar Alvarez, and Enrique Santiago. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carmelo Figueroa and Genoveva Alvarez. As we mourn the loss of this inspiring woman, we also celebrate the strong, generous, and resilient life she led. In the words of Maya Angelou, "I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it." Mercedes was not reduced by life's challenges, but instead, she rose above them and inspired us all.

We invite you to share your memories of Mercedes on her memorial page, where you can also upload photos to celebrate her life. Your stories and images will provide comfort and help keep her memory alive. Mercedes' legacy of love, resilience, and courage will continue to inspire us all.
