Saint Paul, Minnesota
Joseph Severin Lee lost his life on March 28, 2026 and will be dearly missed by those who were fortunate enough to love him. He braved the last few years of his illness with humor rarely complaining and remaining interested and involved with the people who loved and surrounded him.
A working man’s man, Joe was a contractor, construction worker, and bridge builder, eventually becoming the Bridge Inspector and Supervisor of Bridge Maintenance for the City of St. Paul. A born leader he was recognized in his work as a man of conviction and was never afraid to speak truth to power. Joe likely saved lives in his work. He was safety conscious, ethical, and a perfectionist. He shut down bridges when needed, and he had great affection for his crew, and kept them out of harm’s way. At home, we felt that we knew each and every one and he spoke of them with great affection and warmth.
Joe was a devoted husband, father, stepfather and grandfather. Always there to provide support, ready in an emergency and zealously willing to help family and friends whenever he was needed. Some called him “Batman”.
A great storyteller with a dry and sharp wit, he graced many gatherings with colorful stories which never got old. Conversationally, one had to listen closely as his comments were quietly hilarious and often ‘spot on’.
Like the trees he loved, he provided comfort and shelter, beauty, strength, grace and elegance. Quietly but deeply spiritual, as a master gardener and carpenter Joe made our world more beautiful with his gardens and carpentry. This was his love language.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Craig, four children, Michael Lee, Ian Casmer, Megan Henry, Cooper Casmer, his daughter in law, Tyana Bessermin, and son in law Brandon Henry. His family of origin, brother James Lee, sister Andrene Matre, sister in law Colleen Lee, nephew Ryan Lee, nieces Jaclyn May, Jeanie Matre, and Erin Neilon will all miss his quiet presence.
Preceded in death by Ellie Lee and Adam Lee, Joseph Lee Sr. and Helene Lee.
Services will be held at Gloria Dei in May, Joe’s favorite time of year. Will send notification.
