James Raymond Dahm, of Minneapolis, MN, passed away on August 28, 2026, at the age of 73, following a courageous nine-month battle with esophageal cancer. Surrounded by family and friends throughout his final day, Jim left behind a life defined by love, kindness, humor, and a gift for easily making friends.
Jim was born in Moorhead, MN, on January 8, 1953, to Ray and Lu Dahm (Habberstad) of Barnesville, MN. The family later settled in Bloomington, MN, where Jim graduated from Bloomington High School in 1971.
As one of eight children, Jim grew up surrounded by family, laughter, and love. He remained close to his siblings throughout his life, sharing stories, supporting one another, and bringing warmth, humor, and joy to every gathering. He was a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews and loved spending time together with them. They will all deeply miss his presence.
Jim began his airline career with North Central Airlines in Chicago on May 1, 1973, and retired from Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis in 2008. He spent decades helping travelers and later worked behind the ticket counter, balancing the day’s receipts - just like he did his life.
Jim enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, to Alaska, and to Europe, especially Germany, where he purchased nutcrackers and ornaments for his beloved Christmas decorations. Cadillac Mountain in Maine held a special place in his heart for its beauty and peace. He wished for his ashes to be scattered there, a request his family will honor at a later date.
After retiring from the airlines, Jim worked at Caribou Coffee, primarily at the 46th and Nicollet location, where he remembered customers’ orders and became close friends with coworkers and regulars, including Susie, affectionately known as “Snooz.” He later worked as a courtesy clerk at Kowalski’s Markets, where Matt, Laura, and Karen made work enjoyable. In every position, Jim’s warmth, humor, and willingness to help turned everyday encounters into lasting friendships.
In recent years, Jim delighted in becoming a great-uncle to Noah, Ava, Estella, and Lucia where he became known as “JimmyJim,” much to his pride and delight.
Jim treasured the many friendships he made during his throughout his life. He remained close to former coworkers, friends, neighbors, and others he met along the way. He valued each friendship and kept in touch whenever possible.
Jim is survived by his sisters Rita (Lupton-Ursem), Dianne, Susan (Smith), and Rebecca (Mark DeGrood); his brother Douglas (Jenny); and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Pamela (Kelly).
The family would like to thank Minnesota Oncology, Dr. Tatineni and Dr Jacques and the staff for their care and treatment.
The family also wishes to thank his friend David and niece Jenny for the care and support they provided to Jim through this cancer journey.
Jim leaves behind many special friendships, countless meaningful memories, and more than a few people who will forever miss his humor, kindness, and ability to make every encounter feel personal.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
