Eugene Dale Skrukrud, better known as Gene to his friends and family, was a man who knew how to find humor in the everyday, and who reminded us that “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face” (Victor Hugo). Born on April 16, 1949, in the quaint town of Winona, Minnesota, Eugene was a funny, humble, witty, and loving individual who had a knack for finding joy in the simple things in life. A truck driver by trade, he later retired and settled in Pierz, Minnesota, becoming a vibrant part of the community.
As a lover of football, baseball, and all things Red Lobster, Eugene was known to say, “Life is too short not to enjoy a good lobster tail...or two.” He was a connoisseur of the game Keno and an undisputed champion of Bingo at the VA. He loved watching his grandkids play sports and a visit with Eugene was never complete without a round of the game show network. His laughter and wit added a spark to every shopping spree and game night at the VA, making him a beloved member of their community. The late Robin Williams once said, "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it." Eugene was a man who embraced his spark and used it to light up the lives of those around him.
Eugene is survived by his daughter Sandy and her husband Wayne Lease; his grandsons, Mitchell Woitalla (Whitney) and Logan Lease and his fiancée Katelyn; his granddaughters, Autumn Woitalla and Avy Lease; and his great-grandchildren, Harlow and Grace and Hartley. He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Helen Skrukrud, and his son Dale Skrukrud. Eugene's love for his family and friends was the cornerstone of his life, and his memory will live on in their hearts and stories.
We invite you to share your memories and photos of Eugene on his memorial page, to keep his spirit of joy and laughter alive for generations to come. As we remember Eugene, let's remember his funny, humble, witty, and loving nature, and the way he embraced life with open arms and a hearty laugh.
